Keep your counter organized and dry with a farmhouse sink caddy. These storage solutions are the perfect way to maximize space around your sink.

Benefits of a Farmhouse Sink Caddy

Caddies, or saddles, are essentially small baskets that you hang around your sink. They’re a versatile storage solution that you can use for a number of things.

However, the main function of these accessories is a farmhouse sink organizer. They allow you some extra storage space for things you generally use around the sink, such as:

  • Soap
  • Sponges
  • Small Towels
  • Scrub Brushes
  • Cleaning Solutions

All of these are things that are commonly used for washing dishes, but they can be tricky to organize. Too often, these items are left on the counter, dripping water or soap. A kitchen sink caddy allows you to air out these items, while also keeping them off the counter.

This is particular important for sponges and other scrubbers. Since sponges are constantly being soaked in water, it’s important to let them dry out when possible. If not, they can start to grow bacteria and develop a foul smell.

A farmhouse sponge holder helps with that by allowing air to reach the sponge and letting excess water drain away. If your sponge is able to dry out effectively, it will stay fresher for longer.

But there are tons of other ways to use these items. For example, you can also use them as a drying rack for smaller utensils.

The main downside to these farmhouse sink accessories is that they take up space in your basin. For smaller or double basin fixtures, this can be an inconvenience.

If you regularly fill up your basin with dishes and other items, consider some alternative options. Over the sink or countertop organizers work just as well.

There are also some other considerations you’ll need to make for things like cleaning and material choice. Check out our important considerations section below, for more information.

Best Kitchen Sink Caddy Options

If you’re looking for a great sink caddy for farmhouse sink, check out the options below. There are ton of different styles, so we’ve arranged them by one important feature: where they go in the basin.

Check out the information about each placement below:

Side of the Basin

These options tend to sit high along the side wall of the basin. They’re usually attached with suction cups, although some options come with hooks for additional support.

The main issue with these is that they tend to be larger than other options. That can be a benefit, since it allows for more storage, and can even double as a drying rack. It also makes it easier to hold larger items, particularly if you get an option that comes with an additional hook over the top, for support.

Unfortunately, that also means that they take up more space. They’re going to extend further into the basin, and they may sit lower as well.

That’s why these are best used with single basin sinks.

They’re going to give you more organization potential, which is what you need with a single basin. And the fact that they take up more space won’t be as noticeable as it would be with a double basin.

It’s also important to point out that suction cups can be extremely annoying to work with. Of the options, they’re one of the least secure.

That’s not to say that all suction cups are bad. Some options will stay secure, even with heavy use. However, if you get stuck with an option that doesn’t stick well to your sink, it’s essentially useless.

If you know you don’t have the patience to deal with suction cups, steer clear of these options.

Faucet options are amongst the smallest, but they more than make up for that with their convenience.

For these options, all you have to do is hook them over your faucet. They come with adjustable straps or hooks, so they’ll fit any faucet, and you can hang them however you like.

That adjustability has the added benefit of making them easy to remove as well. When you need more space or no longer require the extra storage, just take them off. This also makes it easier to clean and dry them regularly.

As previously mentioned, the downside is that they tend to run smaller than other options. You’re not going to fit much in there besides a sponge or some utensils.

It’s still added storage, but it’s not as functional as some of the larger options.

Over the Sink

Another convenient option is to get something that fits over the sink.

These are similar to over the sink drying racks, but they tend to be smaller. These are designed for holding sponges and soap, so they come with much less surface area. Drying racks also tend to sit deeper in the basin, to accommodate tableware.

Like the faucet option, these are convenient to use.

They don’t require any effort to install, since you just lay them across the basin. (Most options are adjustable, to accommodate any size sink). That means they’re also easy to remove and clean, as needed.

What sets these options apart is that they give you more storage. They have a larger surface area than most other options, so you can use them for more organization.

Since they sit above the basin, they’re also a little more versatile. You can use them as a small drying rack, or strainer, if needed.

The downside to these is that they take up space in a different way from the other options. Since they sit on top, they can get in the way of moving items in and out of the basin. They’re also easy to knock away or misplace if you’re not careful.

However, they’re still functional, versatile, and easy to use. If you’re not a fan of options that have baskets or sit low in the basin, these are a good alternative.

Sink Divider

If you have a double basin sink, you can get a a sink saddle, for more a larger, more secure option.

With these options, the storage is doubled, since you can get options with two baskets. The baskets hang over the basin divider, which is why these are sometimes called sink saddles.

The other great part of these is that they’re more secure. The weight of the container will keep it in place, and there’s no fussing with suction cups, etc.

Although, if you make one side too heavy, you do risk the possibility of it tipping. So keep that in mind and try to balance the weight when possible.

The downside to these options is that they can take up a lot of space. With a double basin sink, you don’t always have room to spare. And in most cases, you don’t really need extra organization, since the sink already has some built in.

However, these are still a good option if you just want to keep your counters clear. They have a lot of room for soap and sponges. And you can divide them up, using one side as a drying rack, and one side as storage.

To save space, you can also consider getting an option that only has a single basket. These are similar to options that sit on the side of the basin. The difference is that these are made to hang from the basin divider instead.

These are a little less secure than a double basket option, but they’re still a good choice.

Important considerations

Regardless of which style you choose, there are few considerations you need to make before you purchase. Here’s an overview of some things you’ll want to think about:

The first consideration is the extra maintenance these products require.

A sink basin is a dirty environment, so anything you put into the basin needs to be cleaned regularly. You’ll need to sanitize, wash, and fully dry whatever caddy you choose.

With metal options, you do get the benefit of not having to clean as often. Most are simply baskets, so they’ll dry out well, even with frequent use. That means you won’t have to worry as much about hard water and mildew build-up.

However, plastic options do have their own benefits. This material can withstand more exposure to water and stronger cleaners. So while some options in this material may require more frequent cleaning, they are still easier to clean.

With these, all you have to do is spray some cleaner, wipe them down, rinse, and leave them to dry. That’s a little easier than getting into all the corners on a metal basket option.

For both materials, getting an option with good drainage will save you a lot of trouble. If standing water isn’t accumulating in the caddy, it will stay clean longer.

The other consideration is the potential damage to your sink.

Anything that hangs in the basin of your sink has the potential to cause scratches or other damage. This is especially true for options that have hooks or hangers.

If you have a delicate sink, a plastic option would be the best choice. Although durable, plastic is a softer material that shouldn’t cause any damage to the basin.

Metal is a harder material, and it risks damaging your sink if you’re not careful. However, you can still use metal options on all sink materials. For instance, caddies that have suction cups should be fine, since it’s only the suction cup that touches the basin.

For other metal options, just make sure you’re using them carefully. Never slide something directly against the surface of the basin. Try not to drop things either, as this can cause scratches or cracks.

As long as you’re using caution, any option will work.

Choosing the Best Accessory for You

When making your selection, it’s important to consider the specific needs of your basin.

If you’re prioritizing organization, you’ll want to get something larger, or something that has a lot of features.

If you’re prioritizing space, get a smaller option. Options that go over the sink or faucet, for example, will give you organization, while saving you room.

You’ll also want to keep in mind that these will require regular cleaning and careful handling. Choosing the right material for your needs is just as important as the right style.

Luckily, there are tons of great options available. No matter what you choose, the extra storage is sure to help you keep the space around your sink organized and clean.

So consider your kitchen needs and choose a farmhouse sink caddy to make your life a little easier.
